Description

Key fiddles are close relatives of the hurdy gurdy. The strings are played with a bow, while this task in a hurdy gurdy is accomplished by a wheel. The played strings are pressed not with the fingers, but rather by buttons with flags (keys) on them. In fact, they are indeed similar to wooden keys and have thus given that name in English to the keys on the piano keyboard.

Nowadays the nyckelharpa from Sweden is well known - probably the most famous and special instrument of traditional Swedish folklore!

Our modern soprano nyckelharpa has four main strings, one of which is played exclusively as a drone string. The other three can be "tapped" (i.e. stopped) via a three-row chromatic keyboard. In addition, there is a complete set of twelve chromatic resonance strings that resonate with every note giving the nyckelharpa its unique, etheric sound. The tuning of the played strings is traditionally c-g'-c'a', in Germany d-g-d'-a' is also used. The chromatic scale of the played strings begins with g.

A beauty in wood with an inimitable sound!
